Postponement of ACT Open, New Junior & Veterans event, ACTBA secretary required

The ACT Open, originally scheduled for 1-2 May at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), has necessarily been postponed until 20-21 November (to replace the Brindabella Challenge Cup which has been cancelled for 2021), due to the AIS’s decision not to allow non-Olympic athletes on site ahead of the Olympics.

The ACTBA will be hosting two new events at the AIS in early June.  An ACT Junior Closed event will be held on 5 June and a Veterans competition on 6 June.  Details of both to be advised over the coming two or so weeks.

Another successful Interclub competition on 27th March 2021

The success of this style of club teams event highlights that many ACT clubs welcome the atmosphere of such a social, club-versus-club, competition.

Eight clubs (over half of the total number of ACTBA affiliated clubs) put in 28 teams across all four grades, with 126 players participating.  What was particularly pleasing to see was the number of younger children participating; indeed the ACTBA Committee has decided that the next InterClub (tentatively scheduled for early October) will see an ‘E’ Grade (‘E’ for enthusiastic) which will limited to U13s and so enable a much fairer competition for these youngsters.

Great work

ACTBA “Shuttle Time” Course for ACT PE teachers a hit!

The Association delivered the “Shuttle Time Teachers Reduced Course” to teachers at Melba Copland Secondary School in Term 4. As the course is a TQI Accredited professional learning program, teachers could claim attendance towards their professional development.
19 teachers from 5 ACT schools attended the course. Teachers had little knowledge of the sport but were eager to learn and play. Shuttle Time materials such as the App and video clips were a “hit” as they were readily accessible and gave teachers the “Know How” to plan and deliver badminton lessons.

2020 ACTBA Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The 2020 AGM was held at Kaleen High School on 13 December, with a large number of affiliated clubs represented.  One key outcome was agreement for a paid (on a casual, contract basis), Junior Development Officer/Pathway Manager position that draws together all of the great work being undertaken on junior development/coaching in many ACTBA clubs and schools.  Indeed, on the latter, 15 school PE teachers were trained in ‘Shuttle Time’ over recent weeks to enable even more teachers to coach basic badminton at their schools.

The AGM also approved the nomination of Walter Lim for a Life Member Award for
